In order to be accepted as a professional member, candidates must meet the four “Es” of the profession of financial planning: Education, Examination, Ethics and Experience. FPI certifies members at three levels:

  • RFP™ professional (Registered Financial Planner™)
  • AFP™ professional (Associate Financial Planner™)
  • CFP® professional / CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®
In addition, members are required to maintain technical competence and fulfil ethical obligations by renewing their membership annually. Every two years, members of the FPI must complete at least 65 hours of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to stay current with developments in the financial planning profession. At least five of these hours must be spent on the Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility and the Financial Planning Practice Standards.

The steps to becoming a member are:

Step 1  Obtain a relevant qualification from one of the FPI accredited educational institutions

Step 2 Obtain the necessary financial planning experience (1, 2 or 3 years) 
  
Step 3  Complete the professional board examination

Step 4 Apply to the FPI for the professional designation (RFP™, AFP™ or CFP® professonal)
